I think you should all check out this link of an article from National Geographic. It is a really big issue, especially in the rural areas where something like this can be so devastating. I haven't actually gone up to see it yet, but I hope I'll get a chance.

wow, that is a really intense serious problem.
False alarm! This ended up being a classic example of Liberian gossip. Turns out the caterpillars are noisy, but quite edible, and probably won't cause a serious problem for most of the population.They come every year, apperently, just not in these high volumes. I guess sometimes even NationalGeographic gets carried away in all the rumors!
